The Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo is one of the most important art museums in Brazil. It occupies a building in the Jardim da Luz, in downtown São Paulo, designed by Ramos de Azevedo and Domiziano Rossi to be the headquarters of the Liceu de Artes e Crafts. It is the oldest art museum of São Paulo, founded in 1905 and regulated as a state public museum since 1911.
Following the reform conducted by Paulo Mendes da Rocha in the 1990s, it became one of the most dynamic cultural institutions in the country, integrating with the international exhibition circuit, promoting diverse cultural events and maintaining an active bibliographic production.2 Pinacoteca also manages the space called Estação Pinacoteca, installed in the old DOPS building in Bom Retiro, where it has long and short-term exhibitions and the institution's documentation center.
The Pinacoteca do Estado houses one of the largest and most representative collections of Brazilian art, with almost eight thousand pieces covering mostly the history of Brazilian painting of the 19th and 20th centuries. Also noteworthy are the Brasiliana Collection, made up of works by foreign artists working in Brazil or inspired by the country's iconography, and the Nemirovsky Collection, with a significant set of masterpieces of Brazilian modernism. It also retains a core of nineteenth-century European paintings and sculptures, as well as the paper works cabinet.
