The Church of Santa Cruz de Coimbra was founded in 1131 by D. Telo (St. Teotonius) and 11 other religious, who adopted the rule of the Canons of St. Augustine. The new Church received many papal privileges and donations from the first kings of Portugal, becoming the most important monastic house in the kingdom. His school was one of the best educational institutions in medieval Portugal, having a large library (now in the Municipal Public Library of Porto) and an active scriptorium. In the days of D. Afonso Henriques, first Portuguese monarch, the scriptorium of Santa Cruz was used like machine of consolidation of the real power. The importance of the Church is evidenced by the fact that D. Afonso Henriques and his successor, D. Sancho I, were buried there.
The status of the National Pantheon was recognized at the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra in August 2003, by the presence of the tomb of the first two Portuguese kings, D. Afonso Henriques and D. Sancho I.
