Maria Luisa and Oscar Americano Foundation is located in the Morumbi neighborhood of Sao Paulo, on Morumbi 4077 Avenue, in front of the Bandeirantes Palace, Brazil.
The Foundation was established in 1974 by engineer Oscar Americano. The next six years were devoted to refurbishing the family's former residence to make it the current headquarters. From 1980, architectural, landscape and artistic collection became accessible to the public, becoming one of the most important cultural and leisure spaces in the city of São Paulo.
Park and home are representative projects of the modern architecture movement. The first, by Otávio Augusto Teixeira Mendes, preceded the construction of the house, designed by Oswaldo Arthur Bratke. Bringing together initiatives to preserve the environment and Brazilian memory, the Foundation has been reaffirming, throughout its existence, the commitment to education and citizenship present in the gesture of its creator.
The collection of art and historical objects began with pieces belonging to the American family and was gradually expanded. Today it preserves and portrays much of Brazilian history, consisting of three main nuclei: Brasil Colônia, formed by 17th century paintings - among them, works by the Dutch Frans Post - and by 18th century objects and images; Empire Brazil, which brings together oil portraits and objects from the Brazilian imperial era; Masters of the 20th Century, formed by works by some of the most outstanding Brazilian artists, including Candido Portinari, Brecheret, Lasar Segall and Di Cavalcanti.
On Sundays, art and landscape meet with classical music.
Promoting Sunday recitals and concerts, the Foundation aims to promote and honor the Brazilian musician.
During the week courses and lectures on topics such as art, film, literature, art history and landscaping are given in the auditorium.
A pleasant and charming meeting point: this is how you can define the Tea Room, with its impeccable service, warm atmosphere and varied delights.
The store, in turn, offers visitors a selection of adult and children's art books, CDs, unique t-shirts, chocolates, cards and home furnishings, many of which are inspired by pieces from the collection.
By idealizing the Foundation, Oscar Americano also aimed at preserving the 75,000 m² area for the Morumbi neighborhood. It was chosen as landscaper to design and implement the park the agronomist Otávio Teixeira Mendes. The contract stipulated that their services would be paid "for a quality tree, planted and avenged." The park was designed to house mostly native species of the Brazilian flora. It has approximately 25,000 trees, including angicos, sibipirunas, ironwood, redwood and jacaranda trees. Pure air, tranquility and scenery invite the visitor to walk along the alleys and terraces, thus plunging into a living and condensed portrait of the Brazilian natural heritage.
