Mafra's largest treasure is its marble-floored library, Rococo-style bookcases, and a collection of more than 40,000 books with gold-plated leather bindings, including a second edition of Luís de Camões's Os Lusíadas.
The magnificent floor is covered in pink, gray and white marble. The rococo-style wooden shelves in two lateral rows, separated by a balcony, contain thousands of leather bound volumes, witnessing the extent of Western knowledge from the 14th to the 19th centuries.
Among them are many bibliographical gems, such as incunabula. These magnificent volumes were bound in the local workshop, also by Manuel Caetano de Sousa.
At present, the only resident of the Palace is an old typographer, named Gil Mangens. Descendant of a family of French origin, who arrived in Lisbon in the XVIII century at the time of the construction of the Palace, in the person of a engraver named Mangens, he devoted, in the image of his father and grandfather, all his life to the monument that welcomes him .
Located at the bottom of the second floor is the star of the palace, rivaling in grandeur with the Library of the Abbey of Melk, Austria. Built by Manuel Caetano de Sousa, it is 88 m long, 9.5 wide and 13 high.
The architectural complex of the National Palace of Mafra was classified as National Monument in 1910.
