Fusagasugá according to the English geographer Welby, a town at the foot of the Fusy Mountains, a town and Sagasuya, the lower part of the mountains. Miguel Triana says that Fusagasugá means a woman who becomes invisible. This region was inhabited by the Sutagaos. The new town was founded by the Oidor Bernardino Albornoz between February 5 and 13, 1562, there is no description of the Indians or population car.

In the visit of the Oidor Ibarra there were 759 Indians and he pointed out the reservation. During the visit of the Oidor Aróstequi of February 12, 1760, he made a description of the Indians, who were 85. The register gave 644 in 109 families. By order of February 19, 1760, he recognized the lands awarded by Ibarra and created the hospital house next to the Church and commissioned the priest Vicente de Fresneda.

On the visit of Moreno Y Escandón, taking into account the increase in the neighborhood and the decrease in the natives, on January 8, 1776 at the hacienda ´´La Puerta´´ he issued the Decree of extinction of the towns of Fusagasugá, Pandi and Tibacuy and its addition to that of Pasca, in its place the neighbors founded the town of whites on May 7, 1776, the day on which its layout was made, measuring rooms, marking the square and streets. The first Church was ordered to be built in June 1658 by the priest Andrés Méndez de Valdivieso. The second was made by Cura Poveda in 1707, which lasted until 1865.

The third was built in 1865 by Cura Antonio Martínez, mostly of brick; It collapsed on September 19, 1908, with Dr. Sabogal being Parish Priest, the fourth church was started on June 6, 1909, finished in 1926 and inaugurated on August 15 of this year by Archbishop Ismael Perdomo. On August 16, 1786 the Parish of Fusagasugá was consecrated to Our Lady of Belén.

The Viceroy Messia de la Zerda in 1771, in a dispatch addressed to the Mayor of Fusagasugá, dealt with the construction of the road from Santafé to Monte de Fusagasugá passing through the site of Sibaté. On August 8, 1774, the priest Francisco Escobar said that Fusagasugá is on the royal road that goes through the mountain where the residents of Apicalá and Melgar continue, while others do not pass through the square but through the Bermejal, which leads to the same mount of Fusagasugá.

By Decree of August 7, 1846 of the President of the Republic, the road from Fusagasugá to the Southern Provinces was declared national, and by virtue of this, the construction of a bridge over the Sumapaz River at the site of Boquerón was ordered. In 1852 Fusagasugá became a canton of the Tequendama Province.

On February 9, 1877, a battle between the government forces commanded by General Mogollón and the rebels under the command of Colonel Juan Ardila and Lucas Moreno was fought at the farm house of ´´El Novillero´´. The first hospital was built in 1893 by the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a lot donated by Don Manuel María Aya Caicedo and Mrs. Cleofe Díaz, who founded a nursing home attached to it. By Departmental Decree No. 290 of December 20, 1895, Fusagasugá was erected capital of the Province of Sumapaz, created by National Decree 489 of November 7 of that year, in turn ratified by Law 162 of 1896.

On February 22, 1893, Dr. José Manuel Goenaga, Minister of Works of President Miguel Antonio Caro, contracted with the Engineer Fusagasugueño Enrique Pabón Liévano the layout of the road from Sibaté to Fusagasugá and Boquerón. The work began in 1905 under the administration of President Rafael Reyes, it was suspended on February 10, 1906 because of the Barro Colorado attack, it continued in March 1913. In 1930 it arrived in Fusagasugá with the contribution of the same citizens in its final stage, and in 1934 to Arbeláez.

By Article 12 of Ordinance 21 of 1944, the construction of the Fusagasugá El Boquerón highway was established by the Llano road. In 1908 the iron and wood bridge of Boquerón was inaugurated over the Sumapáz river, which was given the name ´´Eliseo Medina Bridge´´ under whose administration it was built. In 1930 it was used for the passage of motor vehicles until 1953 when it was replaced by the current one.

The first cemetery, which was on the site of ´´Pekin´´ inaugurated in 1822, was replaced in 1852 by another that was made in front of the hospital, and this in turn by the current one, which was inaugurated by Cura Sabogal on 31 October 1910. In 1929 in Quinta Coburgo the candidacy of Enrique Olaya Herrera was proclaimed. On August 1, 1970, the Technical University Institute was inaugurated, created by Ordinance No. 45 of December 19, 1969, established there by Decree No. 537 of May 8, 1970 of Governor Joaquín Piñeros Corpas.





Fusagasugá is one of 116 municipalities in the department of Cundinamarca in the central region of Colombia. Known as ´´Ciudad Jardín de Colombia´´ also called “Tierra Grata”, it is the capital of the Province of Sumapáz and an important nucleus of development in the south of the department.

Fusagasugá has 107,259 inhabitants (2003 census), making it the fourth largest municipality and population in the department after Bogotá, Girardot and Soacha. Additionally, it has a high volume of floating population because it is an important regional center for commerce and services; with great aptitude as a university educational city and environmental tourism due to its proximity to the country's capital. The city is located on a green plateau bathed by the Cuja and Chocho or Panches rivers, surrounded by the Quininí and Fusacatán hills that make up a splendid valley, with a climate and landscape without equal. It is the precursor of the original rhythm of the Creole Rumba. A city that opens its doors with the slogan ´´Be happy, become a fusagasugueño´´.

The Fusagasugueño territory is located between 550 and 3,050 meters above sea level. The urban perimeter is at an average height of 1,765 meters above sea level with an average temperature of 20 ° C. The average relative humidity is 85%, with monthly maximums of 93% and monthly minimums of 74%, with a precipitation greater than 1,250 mm.

Fusagasugá was initially a crossroads. A place of obligatory passage, since it was the only relatively flat terrain in the middle of the foolish relief of the southwestern slope of the Cundiboyacense plateau. There, one of the first markets of the indigenous communities that inhabited the center of the country had a seat, because the Muiscas, Panches and Pijaos converged.
