The image of the Lord of the Miracles of Girón (Santander), they say, is responsible for hundreds of those released in that department. The account is lost, but, in the area, all the families that have had to suffer this drama and have entrusted themselves to Señor de Palo, as he is popularly known, come to the church that keeps it to thank him for his spiritual efforts . They say that he is the best mediator between the victim's relatives and the kidnapping gangs.
That is why every year the church fills up with parishioners, regardless of the intense mid-day heat.
The Eucharist at 10 in the morning is the most important of this religious festival -which has been celebrated since 1867 when the priest Juan Nepomuceno Landazábal instituted it-, several masses are celebrated throughout the afternoon and at least eight priests are continuously imparting the sacrament of confession.
This chapel is located four kilometers from the city of SAN JUAN GIRON (Girón), in the Vereda El Corregidor and was the first to protect the miraculous image of the Lord of Los Milagros.
The history of the effigy, fifty centimeters high by 25 wide, is a bit confusing. The only thing that is known about it is that it was apparently carved by indigenous people and that, in 1740, the spouses Francisco José Rodríguez and María Silva Aguilar bought it for four pesos.
The seller, an unknown young man, mysteriously disappeared. The estate where the effigy initially remained, El Corregidor, was bought by the church 15 years ago to establish a cult center.
