The Cave - the formation of metamorphic crystalline limestones consisting of a large room and multiple galleries - has several levels of human occupation. The oldest dates from around 50,000 years ago (Middle Paleolithic), having served as a shelter for nomadic communities. In the upper Paleolithic it is transformed into a sanctuary as attested by the paintings and engravings with zoomorphic and geometric representations inside. In the late Neolithic it was used as a funeral necropolis. Outside there are traces of a neolithic rock sanctuary, a calcolithic settlement, and about 300 meters a tholos.
The archaeological ensemble of the Escoural - in which we can also include the "Tholos", a false dome funerary monument discovered near the cave - due to its wide chronological scope, the diversity and rarity of its remains, deserves to be considered as an important landmark in the landscape, as an exceptional testimony to the history of human communities that have fossilized here an important part of their behavior.
Classified as a National Monument.
