The city is, through Faro Airport, the second largest external entrance of the country, giving it a strongly cosmopolitan value.
Nowadays, thanks to the increase in tourism demand throughout the Algarve, the city has the second busiest airport in Portugal behind the Portela airport in Lisbon, with a movement of over 5 million passengers per year. The Airport is still used by the tourists who go to Andalusia because certain places of this Spanish region are closer to Faro than to Seville.
The main highlight of the municipality is the Ria Formosa which is a marsh that extends through the municipalities of Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, covering an area of about 18,400 hectares along 60 kilometers from the river Ancão to the beach of Manta Rota. It is an area protected by the status of Natural Park, granted by Decree-Law 373/87 of December 9, 1987. The south is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by a dune cord, formed by two peninsulas (the one of Faro, that encompasses the beach of the Ancão and the beach of Faro, and the one of Cacela, that includes the beach of Manta Rota) and five sandy barrier islands (Island of the Barreta, Island of the Culatra, Island of the Armona, Island of Tavira and Island of Cabanas) , which serve as protection for the whole Natural Park. It is a wetland of international importance as a habitat for waterfowl, being the target of many studies carried out by the students of the University of Algarve.
Terra de Nexe is an authentic Mediterranean natural amphitheater on the first slopes of the Serra de Monte Figo, with stunning views over the Ria Formosa and the Atlantic Ocean, much appreciated by tourists in the Barrocal Algarve, between the sea and the mountains.
